BEYOND THE PANT SUIT

US Senator Kamala Harris became the first Black and South Asian American woman chosen for national office by a major political party.

Harris’s father immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica to study economics and her mother immigrated from India. Harris’s mother told her growing up “Don’t sit around and complain about things, do something,” which is what drives Harris every single day.

Traditionally, women in office have carefully chosen their personal style to reflect their values and image. Jacqueline Kennedy was known for tweed lunch suits, Michelle Obama supported American designers, Madeleine Albright has an amazing collection of brooches and pins. In line of this long tradition, Kamala has shown off her impressive collection of Converse sneakers and classic pearl necklaces throughout her campaign for presidency and throughout her political career.

We’ve noticed that Kamala tends to stick to more neutral colors, blacks, navys, tans, and greys, but she has been known to wear more color depending on the situation.

If you believe that clothes say something about its wearer (or at least her ambitions), the fact that Kamala Harris picked Converse sneakers is a great statement. Comfortable, timeless, and practical.

Kamala Harris is someone whose style we will be watching.
